Department of Business Administration

A Brief History of the Department:
Department of Business Administration is one of the most important and critical departments of the business College at Charmo University. The department is a relatively new department. It was founded back in 2015. At first, the department was part of the College of Administration and Political Sciences, and was planned to be based in the town of Qerehenjir, as a service to the local community of the town. But due to technical difficulties and not having suitable facilities, the department was moved to Charmo University’s new camp in Chamchamal. Later in the year 2016, the Department of Political Sciences left to Sulaimani University, and was replaced by the Department of Oil, Gas and Energy Management, and the college’s name became  business College.

Mission of the Department

The mission of the department of Business Administration at Charmo University is to maintain a challenging learning environment that fosters excellence in business education and develops business professionals through innovative programs, applied learning, research, and collaboration with alumni and the local business community. Our modules reflect the international, entrepreneurial, hi-tech, and tourism character of our region and provide opportunities for students and faculty to integrate their academic work with experience in the Kurdistan Region community.

Vision of the Department
The Department of Business Administration at Charmo University aspires to be the educational backbone of the Kurdistan Region business community. To credibly serve one of the most dynamic regions in Iraq and the Middle East, we must achieve high national rankings in undergraduate education. Not only that but also open graduate and postgraduate studies in the future and earn a national and international reputation for excellence in research. These objectives require us to understand and proactively adapt to the global and technological forces and the environmental, ethical and resource imperatives that are shaping the 21st century.

Teaching Philosophy
Our department is lucky to have a very capable and talented teaching staff in the science of management. Our department believes in the participation of students in the process of teaching. We believe that teaching process is not a one-way process; a process wherein someone plays the clear role of teacher while others play the role of learners. For a successful teaching process to exist, we believe, students’ participation is a must. We, management and teaching staff of the department, believe that it is not our responsibility to teach our students the truth, as much as it is our duty to train them to think and to look for the truth on their own, because not always the truth lies with us. Only then will our students feel their self worth and become independent individuals, which will be useful not only for their study but also for their life after the university.

Teaching Method
Despite the fact that our department, Department of Business Administration, is a relatively new department, we use everything that is available to us to ease the communication process between our students and teachers. Because a healthy and easy communication between students and teachers is vital to make sure that knowledge and information gets delivered to our students successfully. Although we believe that teaching means alone is not guaranty for a successful teaching process, we use projectors, white board and slides that are prepared with Microsoft PowerPoint to teach our students. We also pay a great deal of attention to the ability and skills of our teaching staff in delivering their material, because we believe that teaching skills and means are complementary to one another. It is with this fact in mind that all of our teaching staff are holders of the certificate of teaching methods, and not tutor will be allowed to teach at our department, unless they hold the certificate of teaching methods.

Language and System of Study, and Evaluation
The language of study at our department varies depending on the module and tutor. Some modules are taught in Kurdish, some are taught in Arabic and some are taught in English. But we encourage our teaching staff to pay attention to the English language due to the role and importance of English in this day and age. And if it was not for our students, we would have made English the teaching language at our department. As for the teaching system, the system of study at our department is a yearly system. Meaning our students will study a number of modules (depending on their level of study), and they will be evaluated in these modules on 100 marks that are divided as follows:
10% daily participation and personal evaluation of the students by the tutor
30% mid-year examination
60% final examination.

Certificate and Period of Study

The period of study at our department, Department business  Administration, is four years. After successfully completing four years of study, at our department, the student will be awarded a bachelor degree in the science of public administration.
